Green Papaya Arts Projects (The Philippines)
www.greenpapayaartprojects.org

(No)Bleeding Hearts Club
Curated by Norberto S. Roldan, Artistic Director
Venue: National Museum of Singapore, Glass Atrium, Level 2
Time: 7.30pm – 2am

Green Papaya Art Projects’ (No)Bleeding Hearts Club shifts from its recent jaunt in London’s Tate Modern to the National Museum of Singapore for the Night Festival: New World 2010. A non-media based platform aiming for critical exchange via cross-disciplinary performances, installations, interventions, tactical encounters and temporary utopias, (No)Bleed draws inspiration from loose, street-level insider complicities and grass-roots oriented attitude that provides a non-mainstream approach to public engagement, interaction and dialogue.

(No)Bleed opens with Radioactive Sago Project’s seamless fusion of jazz, rock, spoken-word poetry, bebop and punk. Fronted by award-winning poet and literary stalwart Lourd de Veyra, Sago’s set takes off from its two hit albums Urban Gulaman and Tangina Mo Andaming Nagugutom sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin, an attention-getting and crowd-drawing introduction to Manila contemporary pop culture and urban life.

Tad Ermitaño, the creator of the robot gamelan installation featured in the 2008 Night Festival, the pioneering synthesist/composer Malek Lopez and the DJ/MPC virtuoso Caliph8 will improvise music and visuals using networked electronic instruments and computer programs coded by Lopez and Ermitano. The performance is loosely based on the motif of Orpheus descending into hell, casting hell as a gritty, distressed southeast-asian city much like certain parts Manila.

Ria Muñoz, part of the seminal sound art duo Nasal Police, plays with electronic paraphernalia picking-up sound from a variety of objects wired with contact mics. She joins Tad Ermitaño, Malek Lopez, Caliph8 to configure a formidable ensemble combining video, synth, note sampling, rhythm manipulation, drum programming, and digital sound mix.

Jose Jay Cruz embarks on the project: Contemporary Corpo-Reality.08: Ode to Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag aiming to capture the necessity of human consciousness to see the world as a big picture, as a requirement to understand the complexity of the reality we are in. The body as facilitator becomes a new representation of the dancing body navigating into a world of multi-culturalism, multi-reality, multi-disciplinary. The performance highlights a new video footage of actor Bembol Roco, the main character in Lino Brocka’s 1975 film Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag.

Khavn de la Cruz plays on acoustic piano to perform a live score to his film. Though acclaimed as the enfant terrible of Philippine digital cinema, his participation re-enforces (No)Bleed as a non-media based and cross-disciplinary platform operating from an open and broad spectrum of curating. Khavn de la Cruz also screens a suite of films in a 21-tent installation collectively titled Twenty Comets and the Loneliest Lovesong to Serenade You With during the festival.

Mak Yong is a traditional dance drama theatre form that is performed in the Riau Islands as well as in the Malaysian states of Terengganu, Pattani, Kelantan and Kedah. In Riau islands, Mak Yong dancers wear masks, unlike in Malaysia where it is performed without any.

Mak Yong  combines various elements of religious rituals, comedy, dance, vocal or instrumental music and stories.  Both the main male and female characters are played by female dancers. Other characters that appear in the story are comedian, deity, genie, palace guard, animals, etc. The Mak Yong orchestra is small with the main instruments played such as the drum (gendang), a pair of gong and cymbals.

This art form originated from the 17th century in a Nara Yala region in Pattani where it is considered as a cluster of Malay culture.  It is believed that Mak Yong arrived in Kelantan some 200 years ago and then travelled to Bintan and Batam, Indonesia.   In the Riau islands, Mak Yong spread to various places such as Mantang Arang, Kijang (east Bintan), Rempang/Sembulang, Dompak, Kasu, Pulau Buluh and Cate.  Today, only Mak Yong at Keke Kijang and Mantang Arang still survives. The group that is performing at the Night Festival is from Mantang Arang.

In Indonesia, Mak Yong experienced its glory during the golden era of Riau-Lingga Sultanate and in1950s. In its glory days, Mak Yong was a court entertainment, and the Malay Palace was the patron. However, nowadays this art form that is enjoyed by all and not just by the elite.

The stories that will be performed at the Night Festival : New World 2010 are  :

 “Mentimun Muda”

Once Upon a time, the King (Cekwang) wished to eat a special meat found from deep in the forest and told his son-in-law, Raja Muda, to hunt for this.  Having heard the decree, Raja Muda’s wife, Princess Mentimun Muda, pleaded with her father to let her accompany her husband on his hunt. The couple searched the forest but their efforts were in vain. Instead, in a terrible turn of fate, Raja Muda was killed by The Four Brothers. To ensure her own safety,  Mentimun Muda in turn, seduced each of  them and convinced each that he will become  her husband. When the opportunity arose, Mentimun Muda escaped and returned to her kingdom.

Back home, Mentimun Mada told the King what happened. The King ordered Awang, his royal servant and soldiers to collect his son-in-law’s body. On the journey to the forest, a Genie called Betala Guru descended from Heaven and fought against the Four Brothers, killing them all. Betala Guru brought Raja Muda back to life and Mentimun Muda to her husband. Not without justice – the Four Brothers were resurrected and imprisoned.

“Raja Bungsu Sakti”

The King, Bungsu Sakti, told the Awang, his Royal servant, that he wanted to check his late father’s inheritance. This led the King to travel within the Kingdom in search of the inheritance, which included powerful artifacts. Before the King set off for his trip, he visited his mother, Princess Putri Jerak Jentra,  who  gave him a sarung and stick, “Sarung Batak Tongkat Sakti.”

During his journey, the King arrived at the foot of Berintan Mountain and met an old wise man called Wak Pakeh Jenang. After having a long conversation, he proceeded with his journey. Not long after that, Princess Renjane Muda with her maidservants arrived to bathe in the pond. Hearing curious noises coming from the pond, Kin Bungsu Sakti hid behind the bushes…. What happens next is a tale of trickery, battle and more magic!

 “Wak Peranbon”

Once upon a time, the King ordered  his  royal servant, Awang,  to find a warrior called Wak Peranbon from Sepancungan Daun country. The King had an assignment for him – to find the best meat in the world to satisfy his wife , Princess Jerak Jentre, who was pregnant and craved for this special meat.

Wak Peranbon went deep into the forest in search for this meat but his efforts were in vain.  While Wak Pranbon was under a huge tree, a Garuda (majestic eagle) snatched a dragon child from a stretch of white stone nearby. The blood of the dragon child fell on Wak Pranbon’s body. Enraged, Wak Pranbon wanted to kill the dragon child. However, the dragon child offered him a princess as replacement for the special meat he could not find.

Wak Pranbon returned to Sepancungan Daun country with the Princess Nang Nora. He was arrested and imprisoned by the King for failing in his assignment, but was released after some time. The King, knowing that Wak Pranbon had brought back a Princess, schemed to marry her. But this was not meant to be....
