TheatreWorks presents: Under the Volcano Workshop
Join us for this Engagement Programme. In two hours, learn about the Minangkabau’s culture of martial arts and movement!
Try your hand at Silek Tuo (old silat), one of the traditional arts of Minangkabau, West Sumatra. A fighting style that uses as little effort as possible but utilises fast and precise movements to knock out an opponent. This martial arts style has been adapted to become the basis of movements found in both traditional and contemporary dance.
The strength of Silek Tuo lies in its three-step, four-step and nine-step movement style, consisting of movements such sweep, twist, and stab, to name a few. Facilitated by three performers from Under the Volcano – Dedi Darmadi, Venny Rosalina and Intania Anada - dancers, choreographers and martial artists.
